Getting Started in Polylithic

Polylithic’s opening is a long dream that teaches gathering, fire, and a confusing mammoth, then drops you into a one-hut village with tools the dream never named. Launch-week players called that sequence everything from immersive to a 0/10. This page assumes you already mashed through it, or you skipped it by hosting sandbox. Either way, the first real hour is the same: keys, flint, fire, food, bed.

Do not sprint into the plains to “see the game.” The plains will show you bison. Open the controls guide in another tab if you need the list, then stay near camp until a manual save exists.

Minute one: stop looking for flint on the ground

Pick up rocks. Open your personal inventory. Combine rocks into flint. That is the sentence people needed in 2023 and still needed on 1.0 launch day. The crafting guide goes deeper, but this is the unlock that makes a chopper, a fire, and a night that is not spent kicking dirt.

Craft the chopper and leave it in the pack. It is the first tool and it quietly enables more harvests. Twigs and stalk come next. Twigs start the campfire. Stalk becomes string later; grab it whenever the ground offers it, even if you do not have a recipe yet.

Minute fifteen: a fire you can walk back to

Place a campfire close to the hut, not in a pretty clearing two hills away. Cook whatever meat the dream or the first rabbit left you. Berries and roots are fine for walking. Roasted meat is what you want before any animal larger than a chicken. The cooking page lists the buffs. You do not need them memorized yet. You need a fire that still exists after you panic-roll from a boar.

Hold-to-gather is slow and several reviews hate it. There is no shame in checking settings. Alt cycles nearby world items when a corpse, a twig, and a quest prompt stack on the same rock. Use it instead of spinning the camera like a tourist.

Minute thirty: a bed that is not theoretical

Autosave in launch reports sits around ten minutes. That is enough time to die twice. Craft or steal a sleeping bag or bed, put it inside a hut, and sleep or save on purpose. Bags want to be indoors. Minute forty-five: people, or not

If a tribe member is already in camp, do not take them on follow into a fight. Launch reviews say followers on escort duty forget how weapons work and remember again when you leave them home. Let them carry, pick berries, or stand near the fire. Recruiting a second person waits on happiness. Injuries slam that number. What “done” looks like for night one

You have flint. You have a fire. You have eaten something that is not only berries. You have a hut bed and a manual save. You know where north is on the map. You have not tamed a hyena. You have not declared war on a bison pack. Tick those boxes on the survival checklist and stop. Tomorrow is for grindstones and pride.

If the dream still has you angry, that is fair. The rest of the game is better than its intro. Give the plains one honest hour with a save point, then decide with the review in hand instead of with a refund timer and a stuck storage prompt.
