Building a Polylithic Settlement

A frame, a cover, a bed, and only then a pretty courtyard.

Settlement

A settlement in Polylithic is a save point that learned to cook. The art wants a village postcard. The systems want a hut the quest log will admit is a house, a bed that will accept a sleeping bag, and stations close enough that villagers do not path through a river to reach the grindstone. This page is the build order. Pair it with buildings for the catalog and how to form a tribe for the people you are housing.

Do not decorate first. A bone facade on a hut with no bed is a museum of your last crash.

The hut that counts

Open crafting with C. Build a frame with a stone mallet. Add a covering — hide if you can hunt, stalk if you cannot. Sleeping bags and beds want to sit inside that volume. If the game refuses a bag on open grass, it is telling you the definition of home. Place the bed, then use it. Autosave is not this page’s friend. See controls.

Story quests that ask “what is a house” are not being poetic. They are checking for this structure. A fence and a fire pit may look like a camp and still fail the check. When a quest ignores your architecture, add the missing cover or place a second hut instead of rebuilding the entire aesthetic. How to complete the story collects the stall pattern.

Stations in walking distance

Campfire, hide rack, grindstone, later stove. Put them in a line the AI can see. Do not hide the rack behind the hut where pathing dies. Do not put the fire in the doorway where people stand. The villagers page is a graveyard of campfire sitters.

Clay from rivers makes more ambitious buildings. Bring clay home; do not found a suburb on the bank unless you like swimming lessons. Biomes explains why the pretty river is also a trap.

Outposts

1.0 wants you to push a second point on the map. Build it, then assign a person. If the assign option is missing, open the original campfire as well as the new one. Relog once. If the outpost exists only as a quest ghost, you may have placed a piece the game does not count. Compare with the buildings list and add the missing station.

Outposts are not a reason to split your entire population. One person, some food, a bed if the game allows it. The home camp still needs a cook.

Expansion discipline

Each new hut is another pathing maze. Expand when food is boring and happiness can survive a bruise. Enemy tribes exist now. A pretty ridge can be a border. Scout before you plant a second cluster. The review will not refund you for a scenic wipe.

A good settlement in this game looks slightly ugly and extremely close together. You can make it beautiful after the village can sleep, eat, and assign work without a support ticket.

Where the second hut is allowed

Place the next shelter inside a shout of the fire, not on the scenic ridge you liked at sunset. Villagers will not commute. Tames will drown in the shortcut. Guests in multiplayer will build a third kitchen if the first one is out of sight. Keep wood, water, and a hunt path in the same glance you use to find the bed. If the footprint is already a maze, stop expanding and read villagers plus the buildings list. Beauty is a later node on the tech tree. Food is not.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Why can I not place a sleeping bag?

It wants a hut interior. Build a frame and a cover first, then place the bag inside.

The quest does not recognize my house. Why?

It likely wants a finished hut, not a fire pit. Add the cover or a second hut and see story stalls.

Where should I put the grindstone?

In a flat line by the fire, not behind walls. Villagers path like they owe the architecture money.

How do I assign someone to an outpost?

Check every campfire menu, including the starter fire, then relog once if the option is hidden.
