How to Complete the Story

The Polylithic campaign wants a clean sentence: take desperate hunter-gatherers to the first permanent farms. The 1.0 build wants that sentence and also wants to hide an outpost assignment in the wrong campfire. This guide is the intended spine plus the stalls players actually hit. If you do not care about story, host sandbox co-op and spend your life on the tech tree.

Story mode still uses the same hands as sandbox. You will craft flint, feed people, and build huts. The difference is a quest log that sometimes tells the truth. Open it with Q, keep T nearby for tech, and treat a quest that ignores a completed action as a suspect, not as a riddle you failed.

The intended spine

Survive the dream without treating it as the whole game. Wake in the starter hut. Secure fire, flint, and a bed using getting started. Grow food beyond berries with cooking and a cautious hunt. Raise a real house so later quests that ask for a home have something to recognize. Recruit only when happiness allows it, as how to form a tribe describes. Push tech in small bites toward farming tools, fertilizer, and the Neolithic toys the store page promised.

Somewhere in that arc you will meet a large hunt, an outpost, seeds, and a request to assign a person to a place that is not the starter fire. Those are the story’s way of saying “the camp is now a village.” They are also where 1.0 likes to break.

Known stalls and what to try

Quest did not tick after you did the thing: drop the item, pick it up, restart once, and check you used the object the prompt actually meant. Sowing and fertilizer quests have already confused people who had not unlocked domestic animals yet. If the game asks for a product from a system you cannot see, you are not crazy. Note it, push another tech node, and return.

Outpost assignment missing: look at every campfire menu, not only the new outpost. Launch reports say the option hid in the original fire. If both menus shrug, save, relog, and try assigning from the person instead of the building.

Mammoth or boss carcass will not harvest: wait a day-night cycle once, restart once, then leave. Several players burned evenings on a trophy that had already ended the encounter. Do not delete the world for meat you can get from two caribou.

Storage or world interaction frozen: that is a bug class, not a skill check. Back out. If buttons die after a long session, restart the client. Manual saves exist for this exact insult.

How to beat the story without beating yourself

Play in short sessions with beds. Do not chain five quests after midnight on launch week. Keep a second sandbox if friends want to mess around. When a prompt is unclear, look at settlement for what the game considers a house, villagers for assignment logic, and patch notes for whether the studio already admitted the stall.

Completing the story is less a boss rush and more a patience test with pretty lighting. Push the village forward, refuse to interpret every silent quest as your fault, and remember the Neolithic still needs string.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How long is the Polylithic story?

A focused pair can see most stages in a long session. A careful solo village takes several evenings. Sandbox has no campaign ending.

What do I do if a quest will not update?

Retry once, relog, then continue other tech. Many 1.0 objectives fail to tick even when done correctly.

How do I assign someone to an outpost?

Check every campfire menu, including the starter fire. See settlement if the building itself is the problem.

Should I finish the story before co-op?

If you care about quests, yes. Co-op is happier in sandbox. Compare with how to play co-op.
